Car-free municipality

Chamois is the one and only italian car-free municipality, a decision taken through a referendum held in 1955. The inhabitants are very proud of it! This unique choice transformed this small area into an oasis of solace and nature, merged into peace and quiet, where time seems to have stopped. In Chamois there is no traffic, and therefore no noise or smog: only fresh air, clear skies, woods as far as the eye can see, wonderful nature and a still unspoiled mountain landscape. It’s a pleasure to see children run around worriless!

This particularity makes Chamois an excellent member of the Alpine Pearls circuit, which promotes soft paced tourism.

The village, consisting in 7 hamlets connected to each other through comfortable roads or paths, can easily be reached through cable car departing from Buisson, in the municipality of Antey-Saint-André. Alternatively, a gentle route connects Chamois with La Magdeleine. The more sporty can follow the village’s ancient inhabitants footsteps along what once was the only connection with the valley floor, the mule track called “Les Seingles”.

You can move around the village on foot or by bicycle (e-bike charging points are available), and also on horseback in summer and with snowshoes in winter. Furthermore, in high seasons, the chairlift can comfortably take you to the suggestive lake Lod and the Point Sublime, a breathtaking panoramic point over the upper Matterhorn Valley!
