Car-free town

Chamois is the only Italian municipality without cars: a decision reached by a referendum held in 1955, which its inhabitants are very proud of! A unique choice in Italy that ensures this small village is an oasis of serenity, nature, silence, peace and tranquillity, where time seems to have stopped. With no traffic at Chamois, no cars or scooters, no noise and no smog, there’s just clean air, clear skies, forests as far as the eye can see, magnificent nature and a still uncontaminated and untouched mountainous landscape. People get around on foot, by bike or on horseback, the more sporty carrying a backpack. There are also people pushing strollers with their young children who can run and play without any risk. The village can be comfortably reached by the cable car departing from Buisson, or for the more energetic there is a steep trail climbing 700 metres through the woods. Chamois consists of 7 hamlets, small groups of traditional houses in wood and stone, connected by effortless roads or paths.
